Cigarettes and Prince Harry

Cannot believe this article about European requirements for cigarettes. I really doubt that this is going to turn the dedicated smoker, or even the young new smoker, off smoking. Still, Europe is Europe and it is amazing the strange ideas they can come up with. Not related, I except, but given the row over MP's expenses if you really want to see extravagance then have a look at what they allow MEP's to spend.

As for this article where Prince Harry left a photographer with a "split lip". Can you blame him? I do not necessarily condone this incident but I can understand the circumstances where the press would put themselves in a situation where they were threatening and menacing. Look what happened to his mother!

I am now away for the next week as it is half term. I am off to Cardigan and expect a wet and wild week.

If I get internet access I will keep you up to date with thoughts etc. If not then see you in a week! Double deliveries for me in Grove next weekend as penance!

I agree. The government have been talking about it for sometime. It doesn't matter if it is shocking- for some people, it will stop them, and for that it is worth it.

Who cares if it is the EU? I'm sure he wants smoking deaths to fall- or does Kevin want to make his friend Ken Clarke a few extra pounds?

Can the above poster give us the relevent links to each of his alledged 'policies' of the Lib Dems? This will be interesting!

OK I admit it.

It is not Lib Dem policy to wear anoraks, just a widely held preference of teh membership.

A robust point of view from the above poster.

Soundly Liberal. educate and inform, rather than abolish and ban.

It is not just London Boroughs, by the way, Lib-Dem run Liverpool Council has just become the first in the country to ban smoking in public places.

Very authoritarian.

The people who post saying that banning smoking in public places is authoritarian and illiberal have got their facts all wrong.

You talk about banning it in restaurants and bars (where people can choose to go), but what about places where people have NO choice but to go, like railway stations, bus stops, the pavement, etc? Why should non-smokers walking around in such public places and minding their own business be forced to inhale the disease-causing smoke of selfish people? I have lost count of the number of times I have been waiting on the pavement for a bus minding my own business, and some revolting slob has stood right beside me and lit up a stinking fag, thus making my clothes smell of smoke for the rest of the day and no doubt polluting my lungs with carcinogens.

What about our liberties, eh? Why do you think the right of smokers to poison other people's air is more important than the right of those people to go about their business without being poisoned?

Those who support the right to smoke in public have a truly twisted view of what "liberal" means.

When people ask if I mind them smoking I reply "not if you don't mind my farting". Very wisely they don't usually light up.

To the postings concerned about foul air (of either variety) then I suggest you stand at the bus stop in a position where the wind is blwing the smell/smoke away from you. I am sure we do not need to legislate for such commom sense!!

I disagree entirely, Kevin. It's all very well to say move upwind of the smoker, but what about when the next smoker then comes along and stands upwind of me, puffing their foul smoke out? And besides, why should we non-smokers have to restrict where we go in public because these selfish people cannot keep their vile habit to themselves?

I am afraid you DO have to legislate for these people, because they just don't understand basic consideration. And if you do not recognise that people should be allowed to walk the streets without being assaulted by foul-smelling carcinogens, then shame on you.
