There was a considerable amount of opposition to the establishment of a take away curry shop on the somewhat tranquil Alexandra Drive parade in Berrylands. A considerable number of residents objected to the planning permission to allow this. Councillors let it through anyway. (I was not able to vote as I live too close and therefore have an "interest" in the application).
But the owner is back. He apprently wants a licence to serve food from 8.00am to 10.00 pm every day of the week, even though he has not yet opened the shop. This is somewhat absurd and quite rightly residents are against this, including me.
There is quite a community around this area. People know each other and help each other when they can. There is a real fear that this type of take away will lead to an increase in litter and anti social behaviour and I hope my Council colleagues and officers think hard before allowing this application. This type of outlet is innaprrpriate in a neighbourhood parade.

You say (sic) 'This type of outlet is innaprrpriate in a neighbourhood parade.'
Why - 'neighbourhood parades' have Indian take aways up and down the country (and indeed in Surbiton and Tolworth too). If it was a chippie that would be OK?
It seems to me you've been thinking a bit too much about what Michael Howard has been thinking.
We don't want this racist stereotyping nonsense here.
If you believe in something you should stand up for it. But then you've never been one to take a stance - you prefer sniping from the sidelines.
Opposition to the opening of a curry takeaway down the Alexandra Drive parade makes a lot of sense. As an Asian who lives down the road I dont see how opposing this is rascist. I dont want an increase in litter and anti-social behaviour down my road thank you very much. Any liberal politically correct folks ..GET A LIFE!! Hopefully the owner can find a more appropriate location near a motorway!
The amusing thing about this is that the first anonymous is himself making racist assumptions because I have never said it was an Indian take away. In fact it is South African curry, which apprently is very popular.
As for sniping, well it appears this is no more than you are doing under the cloak of anonymity!
Would this shop do deliveries? I rather like South African curries!
Hang on, I have had another thought! Would there be much of an issue with littering with a curry take away? Most people order over the telephone and take the meal home. I cannot imagine that many people will want to eat a curry on the street - which they would be more likely to do with a kebab or a burger. Also if the take away closed at 10pm there would not be much of a noise issue here.
No idea about deliveries and have never had a South African curry so cannot comment.
Litter? I think the problem is that they want to extend their hours from 8am to 10pm. It seems pretty clear, unless the people in Berrylands eat curry for breakfast, that they intend to serve something else but they do not have to specify on the planning application. I think the issue for those that live near, especially those above the shopping parade, is not just the potential litter but also the smell. As it stands the vent from the building is only rising to a level of the first floor. Maybe the defining feature of SA curry is that it is odourless, but somehow I doubt it!!
We have had problems with some kids on a Friday night, although that has calmed down a little. Even the Spar has stopped opening as late as it was on a Friday and Saturday.
Don't forget it was only a few months ago that we had a stabbing on Alexandra Drive Parade. Nothing connected with the shops
sory to her that you stab your selff in may .
Re: the last post.
Are all you Lib Dem voters inbred?
Mr Patel - you are Kevin Davis in disguise!
How many Hindus run curry restaurants in the UK?
As for Tory Boy's ignorance about South African 'curries' - someone from the Tory imperialist tradition ought to know that the Indian Ocean coast of South Africa has one the largest remaining ex-pat Indian communities in Africa. Durban has a huge 'Indian community'.
Maybe this is what they mean by 'South African curries' - perhaps that's more acceptable for Berrylands knowing there's a significant white racist population that enjoys them...
Anonymous...why is it racist to oppose a restaurant down my street?
I do not want an increase in litter and anti-social behaviour!!
