Kingston Recycling rate is still falling

Surrey Comet
Sometimes I hate being wrong but I equally hate being right. Controlling waste in Kingston and increasing recycling is a serious concern. Yet the latest figures on recycing show that the recylcing rate is still falling, despite introducing Borough wide recycling. I am going to avoid the politics of this because this is too important an issue, but the fact is that whilst all our surrounding neighbours are getting closer to the 35% target by 2006 Kingston has yet to get above 20%.

So what is the answer? We made some proposals last year, as reported in the Surrey Comet, but a real consensus now needs to be built around the best way forward as doing what we are doing is clearly not enough.

OK some thoughts..

It took me 7 months to get addl boxes when the scheme extended to cover glass/plastics/tins.If this is normal then many folks will not bother.

The scheme need simplyfying,ALL plastics, inc bottle tops and trays must go along with cardboard.
A simply understood scheme will allow most folks to happily comply but to presort endless dos and donts is a turn off.
Perhaps the collection lorry need reviewing as it seems to me like a converted truck that makes the job of the operatives difficult, clambering about within the frame trying to stuff material into various open box frames.

I agree with much of what you have said.

There certainly needs to be a review of the truck that picks up, it does look pretty awkward and since they added glass collection there does not seem much room. I also agree about the need for an "everything goes" policy although I know there are difficulties in this as we experienced over the exclusion of cardboard recycling. It seemed mad but all parties on the council had to accept that we could not find anyone to recycle it.

I gather now there is a national crisis looming over green glass bottles. Nobody wants to recycle them and there are bottle mountains growing!!

I moved to Surbiton in March and was appalled to find I could not recycle any waste since I lived above a shop. I emailed you as my local councillor to see what you could do about this and you responded to the effect that you agreed however there was little you could do as Kingston was a Liberal Democrat administration and you had passed my details on to Liz Shard. I have heard nothing back from you or Liz which I find disappointing. I think actions would speak louder than words in addressing the recycling issue

I think if a dry winter had been the problem then Richmond and Sutton would have also suffered; they did not, their recycling rates increased!!
