Surbiton Hospital to close

Public Board Meeting - 23 September 2005

This is an utter disaster and one we need to camapign against.

Kingston PCT is consulting on the proposal to close Surbiton Hospital because the building needs large maintenance bills and they have overspent their budget already this year.

Where are our taxes going?

Surbiton Hospital not only provides local care for those recovering from operations but is also a local centre for x-rays etc and widely used by GP's in the area. At the time we should be driving to localise public services here we are closing them because the health service has run out of money. Sadly, we are not alone in this and there is a pattern acrioss the country of community hosiptals closing due to lack of money as you can see fromn this article in The Spectator.

I will kee you in touch with developments.

Good, close it down. Small hospitals are a waste of money and take up too much space. Hundreds of much needed flats could be built on the site. Sound financial and moral sense.

A most valuable site,I dont know how many acres but with additional compulsory purchases I reckon a really cracking development along following lines could be built.

Using PFI type iniatives a replacement local hospital/clinic(Oakhill?) could be incorporated in a scheme producing affordable flats and normal/exec styles.

An underground car park plus parking on ground level with the building on pillars and say no more than 8 stories high, would provide a splendid use of what is now an eyesore.
Of course the Ewell road would need to be red route and the entrance to the new development would probably need a traffic circle rather than lights to keep the traffic moving.

The size of the car park would allow commuter parking for Surbiton Station as well as local and residents use.

The site is too valuable to waste on low rise unimaginative constructions so favoured by councils so,within PFI,get some cool architects to compete with great designs and put Surbiton on the map for being truly Queen of the suburbs.
