The A3 was not built for the type of traffic that it now generates. In a recent Council meeting it was said that the width of lanes on the Kingston ring road are greater than that on the A3. Given that the speed limit is now 50mph I wonder whether actually a two lane highway(given this is actually a residential area) might be the answer. I would need to see the figures on this but we should at least rule the idea out.

The A3 SHOULD be built for prevailing traffic levels,it is,in all but name, the A3M.
Stick it on stilts and make it at least 4 lanes each carriageway. It should continue like this from Hook to Wandsworth and then link to other road skyways to cross London.
While we are at it construct a proper link from Hook to the M25,it is ludicrous that so much development has been allowed with no improvement in the road.
When will our planners realise that the car is here to stay, petrol will be superceded by electricity/bio/gas/lpg etc BUT no one is going to give up cars.
Forget Public Transport it can never be flexible enough to cope with the multi purpose journies almost everyone undertakes.

I was involved in a four car pile-up on the A3 on the northbound carriageway near the New Malden junction. I wasn't hurt, luckily; and nor were any of the people in other cars, at least not seriously.
My car was a right off, and the guy that towed me away said that the surface of the road was extremely poor and this made it very slippery in wet conditions. He complained that there were numerous accidents along the A3, but the government didn't see fit to spend any money on the road.
At a Full Council meeting next week we have asked for a statement from the Leader of the Counci in relation to this. Something clearly needs to be done as not only are car drivers at threat but also the residents who live in houses along the A3.

If you have any influence on how Kingston spend our money on transport schemes, can you take the following into account:
1.
The flashing smiley faces that put up your current speed and a frown or a smile depending upon if you are speeding or not, don't work and in fact take your attention off the road. This is why: It takes perhaps a quarter of a second to read the speed on the flashy thing, and perhaps another quarter of a second to compute in your head what this is about and whether you are doing the required speed. In the meantime, the flashy thing has turned to a smile, or a frown and it takes a perhaps a quarter of a second to read that and another quarter of a second to work out whether a smile or a frown is good or bad. If you have had just one drink, perhaps you should double the times I have stated. In that second or two you have taken your mind off the road, of course you have run over a child.
Much better is flashy thing that is similar to the smile / frown device, but which doesn't require you to think. I have seen a device in Hampshire, which just flashes a large "SLOW DOWN" if you are speeding. I promise you - it works.
2.
The Mall is currently being tested for speed, possibly because it is used as a run for taxis to avoid the Brighton Road.
What I fear happening is the introduction of humps in that road or any other road for that matter.
Why? Because humps damage cars, houses they are next to, are terrible for ambulances, and just annoy people. Ask any transport consultant and they will tell you that humps are on the way out.
There are plenty of speed reduction measures that councils can use if they want to. Eliminating any road markings helps (cheap). Making the road and the pavement the same level and cutting out grass verges is the ideal (expensive). Putting in other measures such as side abuttments can also work.

Portsmouth Road is a thirty mile an hour road, but many people think it is a major road to speed on. That may be because there are no signs to say it is a 30 mile an hour road. Perhaps there should be?
So I am not lone voice.
Thank you Richard
1/Scrap appalling smiley faces and all visual distractions.
2/No to humps in Mall or anywhere, absolutely outrageous things which can onlt contribute to road rage and encourage purchases of Hummers and similar.
3/Make it 40 and sign it clearly modern cars are safer at 90 than when 30 limit was set post war.
Get traffic moving should be a priority
line every main road with "armco" if necessary.
