In essence Alice Mahon is saying that in a survey she did for the Sunday Telegraph she found that most Labour supporters rather than saying "Blair must go" were saying that "Brown should back off and let Blair get on with it". In a slightly less polite way, but no less thoughtful, Sir Bob Geldof said: "Blair has won three elections in a row. F--- off to those who say he
is a w-----, the boy has done good and we should keep him."
This is interesting to me because I fail to see what the Labour party sees in Brown. I know it is not really my business but in an era when this Government have raised the importance of leadership image to a high never before seen it seems "obscene" to believe that Brown has either the right image, intelligence or persona for a 21st century Prime Minister. I may be a Tory but I believe that deals done in Islington restaurants 14 years ago are not ways to treat the transfer of power from one Prime Minister to another. It is no different to the 19th century habit of passing it around to whomsoever had not yet done it!
When Margaret Thatcher left power (was ejected) in 1990 the party had an election. Labour HAS to do the same now and if it does not the demands for a General Election might prove irresistable or fatal.

It certainly is interesting to watch Brown ever-increasing his public appearances in areas not really relevant to his job - joining forces with celebs to help the poor in africa and at the Vauxhall plant today. If I wasn't so cynical, I'd say he's been eased (or is trying to ease himself) into the job of PM. I agree though that he possesses neither the talent nor aptitude to be PM but perhaps that's the Tories' best hope - that nobody remembers to tell him.
However, I couldn't possibly comment on the Tory choice of leader on the Council to replace you Kevin!
I think its Alice Thompson not Alice Mahon as she used to be a Labour MP and member of the socialist campaign group. An interesting article though - but it is pretty certain there will be an election in the Labour Party for the new leader in 2007. I am sure that the left will want to put up a candidate and i would not be surprised if others with ambition such as Peter Hain have a go too. An 'orderly transition' is simply not democratic nor interesting.
Blair should stay
Best Tory PM since Maggie
We don't want some establishment twit winning the next election.
nor do we want Brown
Me thinks Blair is trying to reach double figures so we can remember him for the "Blair Decade". Therefore, Spring 07 looks like the date - unless we have a few more thousand criminal asslym squanderers let loose - or the Tories actually get someone more genuine than Cameron
What we need is a repeat of the Highland Clearances, get rid of the Scottish Mafia entirely.
Brown(5th horseman of the apocalypse),having destroyed Pensions in the private sector and also increased by stealth taxes to 40%,is not content. He now wants to confiscate everyones inheritance as well.
The man must be stopped from ever getting absolute power.
Kevin - What do you think of the choice of Tory Group Leader. Was there a contest.
Suprised Paul Johnston didn't go for it.
The new Conservative group leader is a great choice. I was not, unsurprisingly, at the meeting.
Well, you couldn't say anything else Kevin, could you, when Cllr. Jones has had a very colourful past as an ex-Interpol officer.
Anyway, I hear Cllr. Johnston is not very well and was taken ill soon after the count. With all his success dismantling the local Tory Party during the past few years, we were convinced he was the obvious choice to lead the Tory Group on the Council!
But this is far away from a more immediate threat - the infiltration of more and more Scottish-bred English MP's heading an increasingly over-represented Parliament of Scottish MP's voting on English matters. A recipe for doom.
Is interpol colourful?
Paul Johnston seemed very fit when saw him last night.
Depends on what one knows about somebody.
Anyway, glad Cllr. Johnston is fit - we wouldn't want another seat in a rock-solid Tory ward falling to the Lib-Dems especially as he had the slimest of majorities in 2002 and the Lib-Dems didn't work it this time round!
Glad P J is OK
S Hill such an easy LD gain in any by - election.
All readers of this blog, even those with names, will be pleased to know that I was perfectly well (though rather tired) after the count and am fighting fit now.
Glad to hear that Cllr. Johnston - many of us were rather worried of your obvious discomfort and increasing size. No offence intended as we know you have much to be proud of.
