The pipe organ world is currently under siege because of an EU directive of 2002 which outlaws the use of certain lead alloys. Pipe organs need to use lead in the manufacture of their pipes if they are to produce the correct sound.
This is another EU directive of the bent banana variety and I would urge you to follow the link and sign the petition.

Couldn't agree with you more but what have your MEP colleagues done other than help the EU to force many of these directives upon us?
If the Tories ever get back in power, will they finally tell the EU where to get off?
Interestingly I am hearing many more MEP's who are arguing that the time has come for a real debate about just such a point of view. I am not even sure that this is a single party issue either as I am hearing similar scpeticism from Labour as well.
My view is that we are part of a global market now and the EU is an old fashioned and out of date way of dealing with the problems of the world. It has become a system that excludes muich of the rest of the world in partcipating with European countries and subjugates businesses and individuals. My slogan for it is "Change or Die".
But Kevin, your party is advocating continuing links with Europe as if we really need them.
And if you really believe this blog is not for political advantage, why do you keep repeating Tory slogans - Change or Die, sounds like Change to Win?
Tell your friend to blow his trumpet instead!
As much as I like all the countries I have travelled to in Europe, they certainly have some strange ideas. But that's exactly the attraction - that we are different but loosely intertwined by the fact that we are all from Europe.
However, when they start telling us what and how to do things, I would suggest we go over there and hit with a lead pipe and plastic version and ask them which one hurts most!
"Old fashioned" is not what you really mean is it? They are mostly socialist countries bordering on communism and so the quicker we nuke them, the better!
In the House of Commons on the 4th May 2006 Malcolm Wicks (Minister) replied to Alan Beith 'our view is that pipe organs do not fall within the scope the directive and that view is widely accecpted in the EC'.
Also in reply to Peter Bottomley 'our view is that it should not apply and that view is strongly held in the Commission. I hope that it will be confirmed at an important meeting in June so we can put an end to all this nonsense.'
So hopefully everything will be o.k because I love the sound of the pipe organ - and I am not sure that there was much truth in the bent bananas story either!
Bent bananas have become iconic but I too think there was little truth in it.
